Dual WAN at Home: The Case for a Second Internet Provider

Periodically, every internet service goes out. Sometimes the cause is weather, sometimes equipment failure in the neighborhood, sometimes construction or an accident damaging the lines a provider like Spectrum, Comcast, Google Fiber, or AT&T runs through the community. When it happens, life turns upside down, because so much of daily life now rides on that one connection.

When the internet goes down, everything goes with it

Home phone service now runs over the internet and its protocols. Banking, shopping, news, communication, and entertainment all arrive the same way. For many households, cell phones lean on Wi-Fi calling to get reliable coverage inside the house, which means a landline replacement, a cell phone, and a video call can all fail together the moment the connection drops. That is how our own house is set up, so we feel these outages the same way our clients do.

The part that concerns us most is health and safety. During an outage, even calling for help can be out of reach until your provider gets around to fixing the line. You are waiting on their schedule to reconnect with the people who matter most to you.

What a dual WAN setup actually is

A practical hedge is a dual internet provider setup. In plain terms, that means a router with dual WAN capability and automatic failover. WAN stands for wide area network, the internet side of your router, and dual WAN means two internet providers connected to the one device that runs your home network. The router your provider supplied will not support this; it takes a router designed for two services and automatic switchover.

When your primary provider goes down, the second connection takes over. We prefer Starlink as the secondary because it is satellite based, so the storm or backhoe that took out the buried cable line has no effect on it. In a well-configured system the handoff is quick enough that you may never notice it happened.

Why your Wi-Fi and devices stay exactly the same

The home side of your network is the LAN, the local area network. Every device on it has a unique address called an IP address. Think of it like a street: every device lives on the same street name (your LAN) with its own house number (its IP address), which is how they find and talk to each other. The router is the traffic cop at the end of the street and the on-ramp to the internet.

During a failover, the only thing that changes is the address the router uses on the internet side. Your Wi-Fi name stays the same, every device keeps its address, and the street keeps working exactly as before. If you instead swapped in a different router during an outage, the whole street would get renamed, and devices that depend on each other can stop cooperating. Keeping the LAN stable is the reason a proper dual WAN design feels seamless.

Who benefits most, and what it honestly costs

The people who get the most from dual WAN are remote workers, households with connected medical equipment or a real need to reach medical services, and anyone who cannot afford to be offline for hours at a time. If your area is prone to outages, the case gets stronger.

The honest tradeoff: there is an upfront cost for a router built for dual service, and an ongoing cost for a second subscription you will rarely use. For households that depend on staying connected, that second bill is insurance that pays for itself the first time a Tuesday morning outage does not touch your work day.

Setup is straightforward once both services are installed and functioning. It typically involves configuring the wide area network settings in the router, then rebooting the router and both modems for a clean connection. Testing the failover on purpose, before you need it, is the step most people skip.

A real example from our work

One of our clients works from home and cannot be disconnected. Their cable internet provider has frequent outages in their area during bad weather.
